„It is with great sadness that we inform you that TYPE O NEGATIVE front man, bassist, and our band mate, Peter Steele, passed away last night of what appears to be heart failure.

Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music for our follow-up to ‚Dead Again‘, released in 2007.

The official cause of death has yet to be determined pending autopsy results.

The funeral services will be private and memorial services will be announced at a future date.

We are truly saddened to lose our friend and appreciate the tremendous outpouring today from around the world.“

„Peter was always very kind to us. From the get-go he went up to Martin Mendez [Opeth bassist] and offered him his bass guitar if he wanted to borrow it. I mean, things like that simply don’t happen in the rock business anymore, but I think he had a different view on things.“

Mille Petrozza (Kreator)

„Peter Steele was one of my all-time favourite musicians ever! I’ve only met him once briefly and he was just the nicest guy! Carnivore’s RETALLIATION and all Type O Negative albums have been a huge influence on my creativity.“

Andrea Ferro (Lacuna Coil)

„Thanks a lot for the great journey I had (and will always have) with your music. Thanks a lot for the inspiration and friendship, R.I.P.“

Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil)

„I treasure the moments we spent together on this road and I know he’s rockin‘ out both heaven and hell right now. I will miss you, brother, my influence and adorable giant.“

Hatebreed

„Hatebreed would like to extend our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Peter Steele. He is one of the best guys we’ve ever toured with and a true legend! There will NEVER be anyone else like him. May he rest in peace.“

Evan Seinfeld (Biohazard)
„…my single biggest musical influence… who named Biohazard. I fucking miss you so much already… I love you, brother. I hope you are in a better place.“

Dez Fafara (Devildriver)

„Peter Steele was one of the nicest guys in music. He was always kind to me through the years. I toured many times with Type O Negative and was always taken care of! Big guy with a huge heart.“

Mike Scondotto (Inhuman)

„Pete meant a lot to me, and he meant a lot to Brooklyn. I would say that he was without a doubt the most successful Brooklynite to ever come out of the hardcore/metal scene and a true ‚Brooklyn Bastard‘ if there ever was one.“

Jason Myers (Icarus Witch)

„His work with Type O Negative was groundbreaking and a large influence on myself and other members of Icarus Witch.“

Carnivore:
CARNIVORE (1986)
RETALIATION (1987)

Type O Negative:
• SLOW, DEEP AND HARD (1991)
• THE ORIGIN OF THE FECES (1992)
• BLOODY KISSES (1993)
• OCTOBER RUST (1996)
• WORLD COMING DOWN (1999)
• LIFE IS KILLING ME (2003)
• DEAD AGAIN (2007)
