Ouch, finding five favourite records in just one year is a tough task! Usually I’ll get into maybe just one new release per year. A few bands intrigued me though –

The Knife – SHAKING THE HABITUAL. It’s weird and 100 min long and I had to relisten to the whole thing when first hearing it.

Chelsea Wolf – PAIN IS BEAUTY. My friend Stephen O’malley tipped me off on Chelsea Wolf and her new album is great..

Teho Teardo – STILL SMILING. I love the Bargeld/Noto record and must say I’m quite impressed by the new Teho Teardo/Blixa Bargeld collaboration.

Ghost – INFESTISSUMAM. After weeks of being fed Ghost tunes by the Haust boys I finally gave in and bought this remarkable new album.

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds – PUSH THE SKY AWAY. The man is maybe not as harsh and god-ridden as before, but still one of the best. Great record. And Warren Ellis, oh man!

Well, other than these I’ve enjoyed Obliteration – BLACK DEATH HORIZON, Haust – no, Wire – CHANGE BECOMES US and probably a few forgotten.

I am maybe too blasé to be thoroughly shocked, but I’ve honestly been quite surprised at a few things, for example the grandiosity of my own delirium tremens.

Trying to keep expectancy at a minimum, but Arabrot have several plans for 2014 starting with several recording sessions in January/February.

Our tour in October which covered Ireland, Germany, Poland and The Netherlands. Amazing, awesome people in attendance. The band was tighter than a cat’s ass. It was more fun than I have ever had playing music.

I don’t party much so I’ll say our gig in Dublin followed by aftershow metal and drinks at Bruxelles.

What moved me the most was my kids’ reaction to hearing “Four Candles Burning” from our latest album. The lyrics were written for them. They were so excited – it was a really cool thing.

I hope we enter the studio and possibly get our fourth album released as well as do some more touring overseas… Hopefully reaching larger crowds, making new friends and fans.

NPJ: I am really sorry: I haven’t been able to listen to any new music this year because I’ve been so busy with Civil War. So I only have three albums on the list!!

NPJ: I must say our, Civil war,  debut gig at Sweden Rock. Imagine doing your first gig in front  of

15 000 people. Epic!

NPJ: Once again I must say Sweden Rock. We had focused on that gig for so long and we had so much pressure on us for that gig. But we delivered.

After the show we just let everything loose and the night turned into a party beyond wild.

NPJ: Not much can shock an old metaller like me…….but I was pretty shocked that Sweden missed The football World championships…..well, not shocked, but sad!!

NPJ: I expect that my new band Civil war will take over the world….and since it’s election year in Sweden: I want a new government in sweden!

2013 kamen viele gute Alben raus, da möchte ich mich erst gar nicht festlegen.

Welcher war der denkwürdigste Band-Moment des Jahres?

Persönlich freue ich mich natürlich sehr darüber, dass wir nach der langen Vorbereitungsphase den Kickstart für die „Okkult“ Reihe erfolgreich hingelegt haben. Momentan befinden wir uns auf Tour mit dem neuen Material, und das kracht mächtig los! Bei unserer „Okkult“ Schatzsuche, die erste Metal Schatzsuche der Welt, sind wir mittlerweile bei Land Nummero 5 angekommen, wo Hinweise zum verborgenen Schatz hinterlegt worden sind. Ein echtes Abenteuer bei dem jeder noch die Chance hat mitzumachen, denn die Suche ist noch nicht zu Ende! Bis zum letzten Hinweis, den „Stein der Weisen“, den man finden muss, ist noch alles offen! Ganz besondere Band-Momente erlebten wir bei unseren Shows in Asien! Als wir nach einigen Anläufen endlich in Peking, Shangai, Taiwan und Thaoland auf der Bühne stehen konnten, ein Wahnsinnsempfang! Einfach genial, viele Gänsehautmomente auf unserer Asientour. 2013 war ein ganz spezielles und verrücktes Jahr für uns!

Was hat dich 2013 am meisten bewegt oder schockiert?

Nachdem wir von unseren ersten Shows in Rumänien und Bulgarien kurz nach Hause kamen, ist mein Vater gestorben. Ich konnte mich noch an dem Abend bei ihm verabschieden bevor er eingeschlafen ist. Das war ein sehr bewegender Moment, es hatte den Anschein, als hätte er auf mich gewartet. Ihm ging es die letzten Monate sehr schlecht, und ich bin in der Zeit nach der Arbeit im Mastersound Studio abends zu ihm gefahren, um ihn zu besuchen. Irgendwann mussten wir auf Tournee los. Bei der Beerdigung habe ich selbst die Trauerrede gehalten und wir sind am selben Tag noch spät abends und schweren Herzens wieder in den Tourbus eingestiegen. Mein Vater hätte es garantiert nicht gewollt, dass wir unsere Tour in Europa, China, Taiwan und Thailand absagen.

Welche Erwartungen hast du von 2014?

Touren, Touren und nochmal touren. Das Jahr geht gleich mal richtig los: Erstmal geht’s ins Vereinigte Königreich, danach Lateinamerika und mit dem 70.000 Tons of Metal Dampfer in die Karibik, anschliessend mit Monnspell, Leaves‘ Eyes und Atrocity quer durch die USA. Im März/April steht dann wieder Europa auf dem Programm, und dann spielen wir natürlich auch wieder deutsche Shows! Ihr seid alle herzlich eingeladen! Wir freuen uns sehr darauf! Wir spielen mit dem aktuellen Longplayer „Okkult“ im Gepäck ein heftiges, brutales ATROCITY Set, das voll auf die zwölf geht. Da wir mit LEAVES‘ EYES nach längerer Zeit mal wieder gemeinsam mit ATROCITY touren, macht der musikalische Kontrast der beiden Bands richtig Lust und Laune! Es wird garantiert nicht langweilig! Wir sehen uns!

The festival summer, and the sessions we had in Duper studios, making a record that we are damn proud of.

Our releaseparty in our hometown, Bergen, first of all because of the intense atmosphere, and the afterpart where Thomas and Arve played airguitar for hours.

I also got married last summer, and that was on hell of a party, with friends, family and the guys in Audrey Horne all suited up! Sexy does not even begin to describe it.

The fact that we in 2013 still have issues with gay people. And that we are going through with the olympics in Russia is nothing more than emberrasing!

The Cleveland Indians making the baseball playoffs was pretty magical. Their immediate exit was profoundly crushing.

One of the busiest and most productive years I’ve ever had. My band ORBS will have a new record out before the spring, and a new Trioscapes will be recorded around then, and we’ll be working on a new BTBAM album by the fall. Maybe I’ll have time to work more on a fourth project that is halfway finished as well.

Hard one to pick but we just came home from our headline euro tour with Black Temple and it´s been a great one with many nice parties so I say the hole tour.

I can not say I was shocked but it didn´t feel good about Lemmy cancelling not one but two tours this year. Really hope he will recover and be back on track next year. The world needs Lemmy and Motörhead.

I guess we will keep touring this spring and do festivals this summer, we are already working on new stuff for our next album so we will keep that going and maybe start recording in the fall. We will see what happens but I look forward to 2014 as a good Bombus year and I would be surprised if I was wrong.

When Kirk Hammett of METALLICA came to see BROKEN HOPE at our 2012 concert in San Francisco! I’ll never forget that…thank god I took photos AND video that’s on the BROKEN HOPE DVD documentary (25 Years of Sickness—The Broken Hope Story)!

The biggest party of 2013 was one I was at the NAMM show in Anaheim, CA. in January.  I think it was the Schecter Guitar party…Exodus played, Prong and Jeff Loomis were there. So many rock and metal stars were at this thing, it was surreal! I got pretty ripped.

I’d say both the Boston Marathon bombing and the George Zimmerman verdict (of Not Guilty) here in the United States. The Boston bombing was so senseless and terrible, and I’m still in disbelief it happened. Then the George Zimmerman trial verdict floored me. For those who don’t know, George Zimmerman profiled a teenager—Trayvon Martin—in Florida. Zimmerman followed Martin by car and then by foot because he looked „suspicious“ before he shot him in the head, killing him. It was later found that Martin was unarmed and there were no signs of him struggling on the scene, but George Zimmerman was let go, found Not Guilty.

I expect more BROKEN HOPE tours, festival appearances, and to write and release another BH record.  I expect 2014 to be our best year yet!

Probably getting to play Dubai for the first time, with Yngwie Malmsteen at the same festival. A very unique and slightly surrealistic experience that reminded us that experiencing new places is one of the biggest advantages with being in a band.

I’m old. I don’t do parties. But I hear rumours that some of the other members reached an epic alcoholic nirvana at Summerbreeze, which is a fine old D.T. tradition.

Trying to think of a good reply here, but most things that occur aren’t that surprising or shocking, be it on a personal or global level. Maybe next year will bring a „didn’t see this coming“-moment, but I doubt it.  Even something very major like the discovery of extraterrestial life would be a „well, it was bound to happen“-scenario.

Lots of touring all over the world (South America, North America, Japan, Australia, China etc) and hopefully a new D.T. release in some form. We have some material from the last recording session that probably will see the light of day next year.

Well I’ve been hassled by the law quite a bit over the years in my travels with the band. But without getting too specific, sitting in cuffs or in a cell somewhere is very memorable.

Well I’ve been to a few of those this year too, too many to remember. Between tours‘ worth of after parties or going for two days straight just hanging around in town, I just can’t pick one.

All the Slayer upheaval. Between Jeff Hanneman’s passing and Dave Lombardo’s departure, that was a rough thing to watch happen. As a Slayer fan, it was a real bummer.

The horror of the world continues to shock me in equal measure to the beauty that is within humans still. Every time I feel like giving up, some random act of beauty keeps it going. Hooray for the hippies!

Welche Erwartungen hast du von 2014?

Lots of writing, lots of changes, and lots of creative freedom. Taking stock of my life, I’m very fortunate, and I’d love to be able to continue!
